This Class

There are quite a few things that I did like about this class. The first thing that I like was the way that the postings worked. Do not confuse what I am saying, I did not like the postings. I liked the way that they were set up. I liked that we were given two questions to respond to and for the third we were given freedom to talk about any ideas that we found interesting from the chapter. I liked that we got to respond to the posts made by our classmates and we got to choose which ones to respond to. By allowing us to choose whose postings we responded to we got to give feedback to each classmate. I also appreciated the way the professor set up her blog. Whenever I needed to know what to do for that week I just went to her blog. It was all lined out for us. There are two things I think need some improvement in this class. First I think that the list of movies that you can do the concept application paper on needs to be updated. Im not saying put newer movies on the list, just maybe a few different types of movies. Goodfellas? Tombstone? I almost was going to do my paper on Goodfellas and see how you graded it! I decided not to do that in case you did not think it was funny and failed me. Also I think that we should be allowed to post every nine hours. There have been a few times where I put up my first post knowing I was only going to be able to write two for that week. That was not cool. I know I should have started them earlier in the week, but cut the procrastinators some slack!! I did like the class and I appreciated how quickly you responded to any questions/concerns that I had during the semester.

  1. I also liked how the posts were set up. Giving us freedom to discuss any topic for the section allowed a wider range of posts for everyone to comment on, as well as allowed us to discuss something of particular interest to us. I agree with what you said about responding to posts too. By having us respond to one another, it enabled us to interact, as we may not have otherwise. Lastly, I agree that the movie list for the second assignment should either be expanded, or we should be able to pick our movie (with professor consent) as we did for our first paper regarding the event we were supposed to attend.

  2. Hi Rbros--

I completely agree with you. I think that the nine-hour limit is also a good idea for people who have a lot of classes. I had 17 units this semester and sometimes a comment would completely slip my mind until after the limit because I was working on something else, and had forgotten all about it! :(

I have to agree with you that the movie list should be expanded, or, if we choose our own, we must point out which six theories we see in it and then receive consent from the instructor. As communication changes--which is very often!--we start to think about it in different ways and must adjust our curriculum to better reflect it. :)

  3. Hi,

Interesting comments! I am interested to know why you did not like the postings, if you don’t mind sharing, of course. 

I agree with you that Carol deserves credit for responding to any questions/concerns that we had during the semester. In my opinion, Carol’s responsiveness in regarding to anything related to the COMM 105 P class was amazing! Although I unfortunately did not have chance to take advantage of this opportunity, I loved the fact that Carol was available for us at Yahoo messenger on a weekly basis. Finally, I enjoyed the fact that Carol gave us the option to meet her on campus on the days she was there.

  4. I also think that the timing for the posts should be set up differently. Every student's schedule is different and sometimes I felt that I needed to rearrange my work schedule because it interfered with trying to post blogs on time and be in class, etc. Also I think that even though these last three blogs are easy, we were not given enough time to do them. They should have been assigned Friday, when we were turning in our Concept Analysis paper.

It would be nice if there were more movies to choose from. There were a few movies that I wished I could have chosen if we had the choice to choose our own, for example Love Actually.
